When the Next Big Earthquake Happens

I have friends that live near the New Madrid Seismic Zone in SE Missouri, so I want quick notification of any large earthquake there. The United States Geological Survey website offers quick notification to your email address of earthquakes anywhere in the world. They are available in full-text or abbreviated format, so they are appropriate for your normal email or a short text message to your cellphone. I like that I can set a minimum threshold for the magnitude of earthquakes in which I am interested.

<<<<<<<<<<
The U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program
Earthquake
Notification Service (ENS)
is a customizable system provided free to everyone.
You can receive earthquake notifications for any earthquakes located by the
ANSS/NEIC (Advanced National Seismic System/National Earthquake Information
Center) in the U.S. and around the World. Information for earthquakes in the
U.S. is generally available within 5 minutes; information for earthquakes
elsewhere in the World is generally available within 30 minutes.

Customizable Options:

    • Functional in English and Spanish
    • Specify your local time zone
    • Specify affiliation
    • Aftershock exclusion option
    • Update Notifications option
    • Defer Notifications option
    • Add and remove multiple email addresses (up to 15)
    • Define multiple notification profiles
    • Activate/Deactivate each profile individually
    • Set notification magnitude thresholds for night and day hours
    • Receive emails in 3 formats: long, short (for pagers and cell phones), and raw CUBE format messages
    • Create a notification profile region from a list of predefined regions
    • Create a rectangular profile region from four specified lat/lon points
    • Specify a circular profile region from a center point and radius, or pick it on a map
    • Make a custom polygon profile region by picking points on a map, or uploading XML
    • Remove profiles
    • Manage/Delete account

You can see that an 8.6 earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone is likely to level St. Louis & Memphis -- along with mass destruction in Little Rock, Springfield, Paducah, and other towns and cities.

You too can have one of those Blogthings.

Is your blog boring and dull? (click here to see a boring and dull blog) Are you looking for something fun to add to your blog? Check out: Blogthings.

You can put quizzes about what kind of beer personality you are, what your Japanese name is (maybe Tom and Katie should have used this to name their daughter), and what is your theme song, and many other fun (or stupid) things. It will display yours and allow others to determine theirs from your blog. It will even give you the code to copy right into your blog. Caution: Too many blogthings on a site can cause your blog not to be taken seriously.

AJAXify your Yahoo Mail Account into the Beta!

Drooling over the screen caps of the AJAX based Yahoo Mail Beta? Have an account and tired of waiting for the beta invite? This "hack" comes from Lifehacker and works like a charm!

1. Log into your Yahoo Mail account.
2. Click Options
3. Select Account Information from the left panel
4. Go to Member Information, General Preferences... Then click the link for Preferred Content.
5. Select Yahoo United Kingdom
6. Select Finished.
7. Exit Yahoo mail and then re-enter the site.
8. You will be greeted with a new screen to start the beta.
9. Once done, you can change the information back to Yahoo United States and the beta will stay turned on!

Some people on the Lifehacker site have said that the invite screen did not start immediately but mine did and I'm getting a feel for what Yahoo has up its collective sleeves.

Enjoy the gooey AJAXified goodness!

Shred-A-Rama

If you are a paranoid freak, such as myself, you may find that you acquire a large amount of bills and documents that contain personal information, afraid to throw any of it away. If you as lazy as I am, then you may also find that you don't shred them as often as you should. Help, my dear bloggers, is on the way.

Great Southern Bank is hosting, as a public service to the community, a Free Shredding Event tomorrow. That's right. Bring your shreddable documents (paper only) to the Great Southern Operations Center on North Glenstone. It is the old Smitty's.

Address Books - Easily Keeping Them All in Sync

I used to export my address book from home and import it at work so they would both have the same list of contacts. Any time I had a change to a contact, or a new contact, I would email it to myself at home where I kept the "master" address book. Some of those PST files from Outlook were pretty big!

Now, I have been using the free version of Plaxo for about a year. Plaxo keeps my Outlook Address Book at work and the one at home in perfect harmony -- along with a 3rd copy of my contacts that is available online when I login to my Plaxo account from anywhere. They all stay in sync within minutes of each other via the Internet. While I have not installed Plaxo on my wired Palm PDA, it stays sync'd each time I sync it in its cradle.

Plaxo has worked well for me and I have never had my contacts abused by passing through this 3rd-party's hands. They even have a Security Officer whose job is to prevent such occurrences. Not only does Plaxo keep my address book synchronized, it also allows all of my contacts that are on Plaxo to update their own records automatically (with my permission, of course).

Plaxo Premium offers several more services -- including eliminating duplicates and giving you access to your contacts via cellphone text messaging -- for $49.95/year. Here is a comparison chart:

http://www.plaxo.com/

The birthday reminders are another very useful feature. Plaxo finds anyone in your Outlook that has a birthday entered and begins to remind you of those birthdays a week in advance -- and gives you some online options to send a card or gifts.

While I use it only with Outlook, Plaxo works with the address books for these email clients:

  • Outlook
  • Outlook Express
  • Palm
  • Yahoo!
  • Netscape

Finding the cheapest gas

Well, gas went up another 20 cents overnite to $2.79 at my nearest gas station. I wonder what it is at the others? Thanks to volunteer gas price reporters and a website called Gas Buddy, I can find the lowest prices in town! This site is good nationwide.
